Chanel Goes Grunge? Intéressant.

March 9, 2011

With all the fuss surrounding Galliano this season, I was extra interested in seeing what the other Fashion Big Wig was up to for Fall. Well, the Kaiser certainly had a trick up his sleeve. The normally painfully chic -sometimes even stuffy- Chanel, showed in an apocalyptic setting with fog rolling around the room and charred ashen earth covering the floor. The clothes were equally dark and smoldering, bordering somewhere between Gothic and grunge. The collection veered more masculine than I can ever remember at Chanel, and even the classically feminine pieces were distressed in some way. Many of the silhouettes were boxy and baggy. But, throughout it all, classic Chanel textiles were pervasive – just with a lot more leather and lace thrown into the mix. It was confusing at first, but I’m kind of digging it.

So, can Chanel pull of street? Is this the way their vision is headed?

This looks like a costume for a video game character.
